Martin Parr. The Last Resort (1986)
The Hyman Collection of British Photography includes the artist's edit of The Last Resort, as published in 1992. Initially photographed at the behest of the Arts Council and exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 1986, the series typifies the type of "concerned photography" that the institution privileged. Immediately controversial for its depcition of people framed by rubbish and food, the series has subsequently assumed an important place in the artist's oeuvre as one of his most seminal bodies of work, acting as a bridge between the aesthetic of Tony Ray-Jones and the colour photography of a new generation of young photographers.
